Colin Firth won an Oscar nomination, and Ford left many surprised that a rookie filmmaker could display that level of confidence as a storyteller. That started with his 2009 directorial debut A Single Man, the self-financed drama about a man left so empty by the death of his lover that he becomes obsessed with the careful planning of his own death. Famed for trailblazing fashion exploits that moved him from creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent to launch his own Tom Ford label, Ford brought the same attention to detail to movies. But Ford doesn’t come off staged, at all, once he warms to talking about Nocturnal Animals, which won top prize at Venice and just got him Best Director and Best Screenplay Golden Globes nominations this week. He is as meticulously coiffed as ever, in signature dark suit, white shirt and tie. He is the first to remark on the absurdity of how atmospheric this must look. EXCLUSIVE: Tom Ford is waiting for me in the otherwise empty Cafe Carlyle at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan. ![]()
